Kids Health
Heart disease no longer is an adult or especially an elderly disease. Children have increasingly become at risk.
Many issues are the key to this problem according to The American Heart Association, they are:
An unhealthy weight,
Physically inactive
Unhealthy diet
Smoking at ever younger ages
High blood pressure,
High cholesterol
Increasing glucose levels.
Only half of US children meet acceptable levels in the afore mentioned issues, according to a report, “Heart Disease and stroke statistics, 2012 update.
When we look at our high school children, 30% of girls and 17% percent of boys do not get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity. There was a time that physical education was a requirement in all grades, for to many years this has not been the case. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that one in five children have abnormal cholesterol levels. This has caused the American Academy of Pediatrics to issue new guidelines for children 9 to 11 years. Dr. Stephen R. Daniels, professor and chair of the pediatrics department at the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine says, “One is the increase in prevalence and severity of obesity.
To reduce heart disease in our children we must fix their lifestyle. Once we just had to reduce the amount of Television our families watch, to now we have to consider how many video games, self-imposed confinement to their rooms, iPods and computers.
There was a time that families played together outside, worked with our hands and got involved in sports which now is generally confined to watching as a “couch potato, armchair quarterback”. All too often we seek to replace healthy living with a pill. Vitamins, energy drinks, caffeine cannot replace an active healthy lifestyle. Healthy living has to be a family lifestyle. Parents need to find a way to make healthy activity part of their children’s life. We did not intestinally plan to live unhealthy; it has snuck in on us through an ever increasing work (unhealthy) life style, television advertisement that encourages speed eating.
There was a time when there were two types of meals, one that was cooked at home and one that you bought at sit down restaurants. Then there were snack foods that you could only get at the county fair. There was the hot dog at the baseball game. Many of the foods we eat that have contributed to our obesity and lazy eating habits were once only available and defined as carnival foods. Carnival foods have replaced healthy home meals that mom used to cook such as pot roast, vegetables and low sugar meals. I can’t see people yearning for the meal mom cooked when they go off to college, when all they ever had were processed chicken nuggets.
Healthy choices need to be made easy to make to compete with all the unhealthy choices that are in our face every day. Parents need to parent their children. Parents are in charge when home. Schools need to ensure that sufficient activity is instilled on a daily basis. Just because one or two children is embarrassed to get dressed into gym cloths among their peers is not a reason to make gym an elective subject. Be active, make it fun, make it social and enjoy what you do. Figure out what your child enjoys and do it with them.
